What is pigmentation?

What is pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation can be divided into some parts such as moles, freckles, blemishes, lentigo, melasma, ABNOM (Ota nevus), seborrheic keratosis and so on. Typically, it is formed on face in an irregular shape and size in brownish or other colors. The pigmentation appears on whole face especially around forehead, under the eyes and cheeks. The depth of pigmentation is different depending on the areas and types.

Pigmentation means coloring. Skin pigmentation disorders affect the color of the skin. The skin gets its color from melanin which is pigment. Melanin is made by special cells in the skin.

When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. Some pigmentation disorders influence just patches of skin. Others influence the whole body.

Moles :

Moles are very common type of growth on the skin. They occur when cells in the skin, called melanocytes, grow in cluster instead of being spread throughout the skin. These cells create the pigment that gives natural color on the skin. Most moles appear in early childhood and during the first 20 years of a person's life. Some moles may not appear until later in life.

Freckles :

Freckles are flat, small tan or light-brown spots on sun-exposed skin. Most freckles are produced by exposure to ultraviolet light. Usually, normal freckles themselves are harmless and never develop into skin cancer. Unusual-appearing freckles may become malignant skin cancer. They are more often seen in the summer, among fair skinned people, especially those with red or light hair.

Lentigo :

Lentigo is a small freckle or flat brown lesions. It is pigmented spot surrounded by normal-appearing skin. Large numbers of lentigines are very common, especially in person with red hair.

Melasma :

Melasma is a chronic skin disorder that results in symmetrical, blotchy and brownish facial pigmentation. It can lead to considerable embarrassment and distress. This form of facial pigmentation is sometimes called chloasma, but as this means green skin, the term melasma (brown skin) is preferred. The exact cause is unknown, but there are several factors that can contribute to the occurence of melasma. These include pregnancy, hormone therapy, cosmetics, anti-seizure medication and birth control pills.

ABNOM (Nevus of Ota) :

It is a hamartoma of dermal melanocytes. Clinically, nevus of Ota presents as a blue or gray patch on the face, which is congenital or acquired and is within the distribution of the ophthalmic and maxillary branches of the trigeminal nerve. Women are nearly five times more likely to be affected than men.

Seborrheic Keratosis :

A seborrheic keratosis is a benign skin growth that originates in keratinocyte. Like liver spots, seborrheic keratosis is seen more often to aged people. The lesions appear in various colors, from light tan to black. They are round or oval, feel flat or slightly elevated (like the scab from a healing wound), and range in size from very small to more than 1 inch across.

There are 3 causes of pigmentation :

UV rays

UV exposure tends to increase the melanin production in our body. Long exposure to the sunlight without any protection results in formation of brownish skin discolorations on whole face and body.

Female hormone

Pregnancy and taking contraceptive pills cause freckles and melasma a lot. Skin which is already pigmented generally becomes more pigmented or darker during pregnancy. These changes take place due to hormonal changes during these stages which stimulate a temporary increase in your body's melanin production.

Genetic factors

Skin pigmentation disorders affect the color of the skin. Skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in the skin make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. If your body makes too much melanin, your skin gets darker.

What is wrinkle?

What is wrinkle?

Generally, during the aging process, skin loses elasticity and firmness due to loss and breakdown of collagen in the skin’s dermal layer.

There are 6 causes of wrinkles :

Skin dryness

Excessive secretion of sebum causes acne or clogged pores, but the proper sebum secretion protects the skin. By getting older, the amount of sebum secretion is reduced and makes fine wrinkles and skin look dry.

Volume loss

The largest occupied component of the body is subcutaneous fat. As we get older, subcutaneous fat on the abdomen increases, while the fats around the eyes, nose, mouth and cheeks decrease.

Decrease of skin elasticity

The production of collagen and elastin is diminished and the existing ones do not function properly.

Facial expression

Regular contraction of muscles under the skin by facial expression causes lines on the face and it is a normal part of aging. Although it is unrealistic to avoid some wrinkle causing behaviors such as smiling and frowning, the following behaviors should be avoided helping prevent premature signs of mechanical aging:

- Smiling, frowning or squinting

- The thinker stance (resting chin or cheek in the hand)

- Sleeping on the side or stomach

- Scrubbing with hot water

- Weight fluctuation

- Unbalanced diet and lack of sleep

- Pursing the lips while smoking or drinking from a straw

Sun damage

Getting too much sun damages on the skin is major cause of wrinkles. To help prevent them, stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and make it a habit to apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, even in the winter and when it's cloudy.

Smoking can accelerate the aging process of the skin, contributing. Smoking restrains the skin's production of collagen, which is a key part of the skin's structure. The downturn in collagen paves the way for wrinkles. That's another reason to quit smoking or never to start. Cigarette smoking also contributes to wrinkles. The wrinkling increases with the amount of cigarettes and number of years a person has smoked.

What is obesity?

What is obesity?

Obesity is accumulation of fat caused by various factors such as genetic, social-environmental and economic factors and especially in modern society, imbalance in calorie is becoming the main reason for obesity.

There are 3 causes of obesity :

Consuming too many calories

Most of the increased food consumption consist of carbohydrates (sugars). The consumption of fast-foods has tripled over the last three decades.

Living a sedentary lifestyle

The less you move around the fewer calories you burn. Studies have shown that physical activity keeps insulin levels stable. Unstable insulin levels are closely related with weight gain.

Obesity gene

A study from the Journal of Clinical Investigation explained that people who carry the FTO gene variant tend to eat too much. They also appear to take much longer to reach satiety (feeling of being full).

Doing a diet with eating control and exercising may make general body line slimmer but one can hardly lose fat in certain body parts such as abdomen, thighs, and hips. This is because of the cellulite. As cellulite is different from fat accumulation, it is surrounded by fibers between fat cells and various impurities. It is not easy to break down fat by eating less and exercising more. Therefore, for cellulite, it has to be removed artificially.

It's a common misconception that weight loss and fat reduction are the same thing. However, they are not.

When we lose weight, our fat cells become smaller, but the number of fat cells remains the same. When we gain weight, those fat cells become larger again.

Weight Loss

When you lose weight, your fat cells become smaller, but the number of fat cells stays the same. When you gain weight, your fat cells become larger again.

Fat Reduction

After the CoolSculpting® procedure, the treated areas actually have fewer fat cells. And unlike what happens with other procedures, there's no change in fat cell distribution in untreated areas.

Doing a diet with eating control and exercising may make general body line slimmer, but one can hardly lose fat in certain body parts such as abdomen, thighs, and hips. This is because of the stubborn fat cells and cellulite. It is not easy to break down fat by eating less and exercising more.
